10 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 10th [June 1900]. Went to service in German Ch: R. It was a very hot day. Summer has come on very suddenly. I remained indoors the rest of the day. Nellie went out to luncheon. At 4 P.M. Sir Arthur Otway came & we had a long & pleasant talk. We talked of Henry’s political career of which he could give me many details as they sat in the House of Commons together– Sir Arthur was Under Sec. for F.A. when Henry was Commissioner of Works & when Lord Clarendon offered Henry the Legation of Madrid Sir Arthur opened the telegram accepting it. Nellie came in to tea at 5 & the conversation became more general. The Belgian Minister Baron Whettnall also came—was very pleasant & chatty. At 7 it was cooler & I went out for a walk. Called on Adeline Bedford, who was out, & then on Miss Duff Gordon—saw Miss Alice Gordon who said her sister was ailing & had been so for some time. She is over 80 & I fear is not much longer for this world. The two old sisters are one of the last old friends of the past—there are now few of them left. I came home to dinner & Constance came.
