11 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 11th [June 1900]. Hotter than ever & did not move out till after 5. Mrs La Terrière lunched here. Had a visit from Mrs John Murray & interested her in the Layard Home. After tea I went in a hansom to Connie’s to get from her some comforts for S. Africa. She gave me some of the things left over from her stall at the National Bazaar. From there I went on to Sir Fred Burton’s house to fetch a little picture I had once painted for him—a copy of our portrait by Gentile Bellini of Sultan Mahomet which I got back as a remembrance. It was melancholy going to the empty house– The last time I was there was on 24 Jan when I & Lady Gregory had tea with Sir Frederic & since when I never saw him. His housekeeper showed me the studio where he painted but said that he had never painted after he was made Director of the Nat. Gallery. I returned to Connie & brought her up to dine with us. Afterwards we sat & talked & she told me of her troubles with her son Ernest who is breaking her heart. I did all I could to comfort her.
