12 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 12th June [1900]. I had promised Dr Hyslop to go to Whitley on the examination day of the orphan boy’s school under the same Govr as Bethlem Hospital. It was a fearfully hot day. A thunderstorm came on about 10 A.M. which cleared the air a little but before it began the darkness was so great we had to have lights in Savile Row. I went off to Waterloo Station where I met the Hyslops & we went by 11.40 train getting to Whitley a little before 1– The Govr provided carriages to drive us up to school which were not far from the station. We found the examinations nearly over & witnessed the distribution of prizes. There were 240 sturdy looking boys all dressed in sailor costumes—white shirts &c. When all was over we retired to a cold luncheon provided in a class room. A few short speeches were made– When this was over we went to the Bethlem Convalescent Home close by. There I found several patients I had known in Bethlem who welcomed me. The school boys came to the garden & did their gymnastic drill remarkably well & it was a very pretty sight. It was pleasant sitting under the trees watching them—the garden is lovely & the surrounding country beautiful. We left by a train soon after 4 & I was home about 6 o’clock.
