17 June 1900 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Sunday. 17th [June 1900]. I was very unwell & did not get up till lunch. Went to evening service in cathedral– A great congregation for the Ancient Order of Foresters went to the service in procession headed by the Mayor of the town. Arthur Magee, son of the Archbishop preached the sermon. He is very fluent & his preaching is much admired. The Bishop was there & every place was filled. The men who formed the procession carried standard surmounted with banners & with silver symbols—& wore broad embroidered sashes slung over their shoulders– On entering the Church the organist played “God save the Queen” which was very fine & stirring in the old building.
