18 June 1900 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Monday. 18th [June 1900]. Kate & I drove over to Chesterton in a fly & took with us our 2 cooks Cox & Jane to see the place– Cox has been with the Aldersons 30 years & was formerly nurse to the family & was delighted to go to see her nurslings new home. Monty Alderson has lately been presented to the living by our cousin Lord Huntly & we found him in the midst of painters & paper hangers, getting the Rectory in order. The house is comfortable & a good size– After seeing all the ins & outs of house & garden, we lunched there & then sat out in the garden & had coffee & talked, & then returned to Peterboro’ by the omnibus which goes every afternoon at 4.30 from the village near by. Kate & I went to the Palace & called on Lady Mary Glyn & there saw Mrs Magee the Archbishop’s widow & Mr & Mrs Arthur Magee. Lady Mary was very kind & pleasant & urged me to go & stay with her some day. Returned to Kates house & dined & then went down to the station that I might return to town by 9.15 train. We had to wait (luckily the 2 girls & Reggie were with me) 40 minutes sitting on the platform as owing to a York show the traffic was out of gear. I got home abt 12 & went to bed.
