20 June 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 20th [June 1900]. I dined this evening with Sir Wm & Lady Humphrey. Sir John Leslie took me in to dinner—& I sat by Mr Gerald Balfour. It was rather a dull entertainment as I think all those great dinners of 20 people are. Poor old Sir John is old & feeble with a stammering & quavering voice. Mr Balfour was much taken up with his other neighbour & cousin Lady Stratheden & did not care to talk to an unknown person so I succumbed & gave up the attempt & was glad when dinner was over. In the evening a village maiden who is said to have a picture voice sang very prettily.
