12 July 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 12th [July 1900]. Mrs Austin wife of the Poet Laureate called for me in the morning & we went to the Wallace Gallery together. I had a good look at the Grenze pictures which I did not appreciate. On my return I found a note from Baroness Burdett Coutts asking me to go to lunch at Stratton Street as I should then see Mr Burdett Coutts so I went there. I found only Mrs Maguire (nee Peel) there besides themselves & after lunch we went to sit in Mr B. Coutts study & had coffee there & I gave him my last letters from Dr Wainwright to read abt the Layard Home & consulted him as to giving it over to the Red Cross. He has just made a great attack in the Times & in the H. of Commons on the Hospitals in S. Africa from whence he has just returned. He strongly advised me to retain controul of the Home & said all Private hospitals out there were amongst the best managed. He went out very soon & the Baroness asked me to remain & accompany her to a school in Westr where she was going to give away the prizes. I did so & we drove there by 3.30. She was received by the Clergyman & we were conducted on to a platform in front of which were seated abt 500 children. These schools are entirely kept up by the Baroness & she was received with Enthusiasm– After singing the prizes were given & I had to help her to do it as she soon got very tired & the heat was very great. Sir John Hassall was there & made a short speech thanking her. The Baroness rose & spoke a few words—but was very feeble & almost inaudible—& then we left. She took Sir John Hassall to his club & then took me to Savile Row. I dined with Sir Henry & Lady (Blossett) Alderson. Mr E. Somers Cocks took me in. Lady Tryon widow of the unfortunate admiral was there also Sir Robert & Lady Walpole—not very interesting party but Blossett kind as ever.
