23 July 1900 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 23rd [July 1900]. Hot day & very lovely. Worked at type writer in morning. Helped Alice Rate to arrange a sitting room– About 6 old Lady Hertford drove over from her house at Westcott & she was put into a bath chair & taken round the bay garden & poppy garden & to see the herbaceous borders. She is a great lover of flowers & had a nice garden. When she had left Alice & I went for a short drive to Dorking to get a looking glass for the new sitting room. Enid Erskine came to stay this afternoon looking pretty & become nice & quiet– Alice went to bed & did not dine downstairs. Enid went off soon after dinner & Mr Rate & I sat talking in the garden till 10.30 when we went to bed.
