24 July 1900 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Tuesday. 24th [July 1900]. Sat out in the garden with Mrs Rate in the morng. After lunch rested & wrote till tea time. It was too hot to do anything but at 6 she & I went for a drive & took with us little Arthur Pelham Burne her grandchild a dear little gentle grave little fellow of 5. We drove to Shere to try & see Mr Somerset Beaumont. He was not at home nor did we find Lady Sarah Steven—nor Lady Arthur Russell. We returned home soon after 8 & found Mr Allen Erskine had arrived from town. Sat out in the garden after dinner till bed time—very hot still.
