26 July 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 26th [July 1900]. Still tremendously hot. I went to the dentist at one oclock– Expected Connie to lunch but she did not come till 4. At 2.30 had a visit from Mrs Twining the lady who so kindly helped us to establish the Layard Convalescent home at Matjesfontein. She recounted all the trouble she had had at Capetown going backwards & forwards between the different authorities & how she persevered. She is a youngish looking dark haired woman & had with her a lovely fair haired daughter—they seemed more like sisters. She told me she is Canadian & said she would probably return to S. Africa in Novr. I thanked her for her help & kindness. Connie came to see me abt 4 & we drove up together to Park Crescent to see Maria who was lying down on the bed & felt the heat very much. She is leaving town tomorrow for Branksome Dene which Ivor has lent her for the summer. I came home to tea & rested & then dressed & went to dine with the Duncannons at Cav. Sqr only Irène at home besides Blanche & Edward– Still very hot.
