9 September 1900 — En route to Kronberg | |
Sunday. 9th [September 1900]. At Calais got a comfortable 1st class carriage thro’ to Cologne– There we found the train for Frankfurt. Luckily we had a tea basket & a little food with us as otherwise we should have been starving as there was no time allowed anywhere for feeding. Reached Frankfurt soon after 4. Reregistered luggage & got some hot coffee & started by 5.12 train for Cronberg. There we were met by the Royal carriages & in a few minutes were at the Schloss. Countess Perponcher (who is in waiting now) & Count Seckendorff received us at the door & took us up to our rooms which are high up as the nursery floor. I have a large sitting room charmingly furnished. It has a bookshelf full of German story books in which are book plates of “Princess Royal” showing that the Empress had them before she married. Tea & refreshments were served to us & we rested till time to dress for dinner at 8. I was dressed rather early & was waiting when the Empress’ maid came to say H.M. wished to see me in her room. I found her in her dressing gown on the sofa– She gave me a kind & affectionate greeting. She said she was up during the day but was not able to dine down– She said she suffers great pain at times the Drs tell her she will get better later on but she herself does not believe it. Princess Teo (her granddaughter) came in. She is staying here. I had not seen her since she married Prince Reuss. On the way to the Empress’ room her faithful maid who conducted me spoke very seriously of the state of the Empress’ state—she says she is a good deal worse the last 3 weeks & suffers intense pain sometimes—so that she wonders how she can bear it. H.M. asked to see Ola for a moment also before dinner. Princess Margaret is also staying here with her 4 boys—very nice children. She & Princess Teo went almost directly after dinner to the Empress– Ola went to bed & I went to the smoking room with Css Perponcher & Seckendorff & we were joined by Pss Teo. At 10 we went to bed. | |
