20 September 1900 — Cortina
Thursday. 20th [September 1900]. We were off soon after 7—in procession in a landau, an einspanner & a caretelle for the luggage. The day fine but overcast. Lunched at Tai. The man at the custom house at S. Vito not over civil. Talked of women as le donne—gave a rude nod when we left tho’ the officers saluted us most politely. We were glad to find ourselves in Italy & to have done with custom houses for a bit & no more changes of money. From Tai we all walked by the short cut down to Perarolo where the carriages caught us up. At Longarone the horses rested another hour & Eda & I walked on a long way till the carriages caught us up. We reached Belluno about 6.30 & ordered a fresh carriage into which Nela, the maid & I got & drove off to Salce to stay at the Villa Eden. The rest remained for the night at the Hotel des Alpes. We got to Salce abt 7 & were received with open arms by Mr & Mrs Eden. Dined at 7.30. Went early to bed.
