6 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 6th [October 1900]. Weather hot but scirocco gone– In the afternoon I & the 5 girls went off in gondola to the Curtis’ garden on the Giudecca. An old Vendramin garden with a nice house which they have hired. The garden is a nursery garden & the Curtis have only the right to walk in it. It is very old fashioned & prettily laid out & a small part of it, that near the Casino is kept in the old way the rest is cultivated & has pergolas & vines from which we found the gardeners were cutting the grapes. Mrs Curtis had tea laid out in the entile in front of the house. She had some American friends with her—& we were afterwards joined by Mme de Blumer & Countess Corah. We sat some time also on a terrace out of the 1st floor of the house where we could look down on the top of the pergolas & the lagunes & see the sunset– We left abt 6—& I went to see Fanny Browning & spent an hour with her & then walked home. Iduna Belmondo dined with us & Mr Montalba came in to have a chat in the evening. The girls all went out to have a row in the lovely moonlight.
