8 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 8th [October 1900]. The Du Canes all went to Padua for the day. Eda Alderson & I had a busy morning arranging the water floor rooms for visitors whom I expect this week. Countess Corah Brazza & Fannie Browning came to lunch with us– Had a long confab with the former over the new Italian review—suggested articles—writers & made a list of people in England to interest in it. They left abt 3.30– Eda & I went over by traghetto to Iduna Belmondos house as I lent my gondola to Mme de Blumer to go to see the sailor’s Institute with Mr Christie. They came from there to Iduna & brought Mme de Rubini & Countess Corah & her little girl—so we nearly filled Iduna’s small room– They all talked fast loud and we were immensely amused with Countess Corah’s vivacity & wit—but we felt a blessed calm when we got home & were quiet– Why is it that there are no such soft soothing voices as that of English women? Eda & I had to go for a walk to get exercise & to quiet our minds. It was nearly dark when we set out but the almost full moonlight was splendid. After dinner I took Virginia & the twins out in gondola. We made a giro by the Bridge of Sighs to the Fondamenta Nuove & round outside Venice returning home by the Marittinia & Grand Canal– The night was so warm & beautiful we were loathe to come indoors at 11—& go to bed–
