9 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 9th October [1900]. The girls made an expedition to Torcello in the morning by the usual steamer returning at 2 oclock. I had a busy day letter writing. Wrote a letter of congratulations to the Sultan on his jubilee to have forwarded to him with a gilt cup which is ready to be sent from London & will be forwarded through the F.O. to the Ambassador Sir Nicholas O’Connor—who was with us at Madrid as 3rd secy about 1875– He was a quiet rather namby pamby youth then—tall thin lanky & sentimental & one would never have believed that he was the stuff out of which Ambassadors are made—nor can I now believe that he is clever—tho’ an Irish man.
