19 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 19th [October 1900]. From early breakfast (7 A.M.) I worked at the silk arms—& continued most of the morning. Took Lady Poynter, & Mr & Mrs Walrond after lunch to the Eden’s garden– We found the chrysanthemums all coming out in flower & brought home a large bunch of them– Left the Walronds at Piazza & came home to tea Mrs Montalba, Clara & Hilda came to tea– Mrs M. never pays visits so it was a special compliment she paid us. They are dear kind people. Lady P. helped me to arrange the flowers. Abt 6.30 had a surprise visit from Css Olga Mocenigo—(née Windischgrätz) she is only here for a few hours—& I begged her to come & dine which she did. The Bishop of Gibraltar & Mrs Sandford arrived by 6.45 train to stay with me. This is the first time I have entertained them since I have been alone– He looks old & bent. She is handsome dignified & charming as ever. Mr Montalba looked in in the evening– The Walronds & Virginia & Issie went out for a row in gondola for an hour. Bed at 10.30.
