21 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 21st [October 1900]. This morning the Bishop of Gibraltar held a confirmation in the middle of the morning service. My kitchenmaid & the daughter of the Reader at the Sailor’s Institute being the candidates. The Bishop who is very feeble & frail made two addresses & who on account of his diminutive stature looked very unimposing, made 2 addresses which were inaudible to all excepting those who sat close to him. The old chair which I had prepared & ornamented with his episcopal arms worked in silk seemed to overpower him as to size. The church was pretty full notwithstanding that it was raining hard. I accompanied the Bishop & Mrs S. to the 3.30 service at which there were not many people & afterwards we again discussed with the Bp the arrangement of the chancel– I was very tired & retired to my room to rest till dinner–
