12 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 12th [November 1900]. Still heavy rain & no moving out all day. A very bad account of Maria—the Dr does not think she can live & she is to have Holy Communion. I sent word that I should not receive this evening. Mr Horatio Brown came to call to say that he had been to Treviso & seen my 2 pictures by Paris Bordone there & admired them. I took refuge in doing a little modelling today as I could set to no other work—in the intervals of entertaining Barbara Layard– Mr Montalba called. Barbara amused herself with patience in the evening. Just before dinner I got a telegram from Bournemouth “Sleep plenty strength Maria Sound.” I could hardly believe my eyes. I had hardly dared open the telegram being sure it must be to say she was dead. It is indeed wonderful.
