1 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 1st December [1900]. The account of Maria is marvellous. She seems to want to get well and is quite clear– It is a wonderful thing—& one can hardly believe it or be too thankful. I modelled the whole morning. It was a lovely day & a surprise after the bad weather of the last 2 days. After lunch Gertie & I went out in gondola to the Piazza– I called on Mlle Aspasie Kwekwitsch, who was at home—also on Maria Cozzi & heard from her that her sister Ersilia & her husband have already left London Canevaro having had his audience with the Queen to announce the accession of King Victor Emanuel– He is now going to Zoagli to have the final funeral of his brother the Duke & then with his wife will return here. We returned home at 4 & at 4.30 held a Sailor’s Institute Committee meeting. Mr Woods R.A. in the chair. Passed a resolution sending an answer to the British & Foreign So. to Sailors refusing to send away our present lay reader before they cease connection with our rival. Before the meeting was over Prince Henry VII Reuss called; our old German colleague at Constantinople– He & his wife are here for 2 days passing thro’– I promised to go & see her tomorrow. Carry Eden called to see Gertie. In the evening we played patience and Mr Montalba paid us a visit bringing Gertie some shells & me a bunch of roses.
