2 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 2nd December [1900]. Advent Sunday. Account of Maria not quite so good. I went to morning service taking Iduna with me. Walked home & looked into the Academia to see if Gertie was there which she was not. After luncheon had a visit from Prince & Princess Henry VII Reuss, their daughter & governess & showed them the pictures. They were our colleagues for a short time at Constantinople & the Princess & I were very good friends though we never dined out at the same place as she, being born a Royalty would not give me the pas which I had a right to as Henry was doyen! Only just as they were leaving did we dine together at the Austrian Embassy & she gave way to me. They admired our nice things & the pictures of which they are real connoisseurs. They both paint in oils. The Princess is suffering from a health complaint & they are now on their way to Corfu to spend 6 weeks before they go to Rome where I hope to go for a short time at that period– Gertie & I went off in gondola after 3 to call on the Montalbas & found them at home. Met Logsdail the artist there with his wife & 2 children– She is a nice homely little woman, I believe his ex model & have lived here very retired for some time—but are just leaving. I went on to Mrs Hulton who had invited me to tea & spent a short time there & then went home—but set out again at 6.30 with Gertie & under the guidance of Jane the cook walked to the sailor’s Institute to attend the 7 oclock service. Mr Christie read the prayers—Mr Newman addressed us– He spoke well—tho’ dropping his h’s—& with a cockney accent & rather regardless of grammar. We sang hymns from Moody & Sankey’s book. A very nice service. Walked home by soon after 8 & dined & went early to bed. I received a letter from the secretary of the Sultan thanking me for the cup I sent him on the occasion of his Jubilee & assuring me he still remembered me.
