5 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 5th [December 1900]. The hairdresser came & washed my hair for me– Being long (tho’ white) it took some time to dry– He was hardly gone when Mr Christie came & begged me to go out with him to see the Church of S. Salvador to look at the reredos of the altars with a view to what we should have in our church. From there we walked to Moises della Torre’s shop & then to Piccoli close to my house to see some altar rails & I got home shortly before my 1 oclock lunch– I did not go out again in the afternoon but modelled– Had several people to 5 o’cl tea amongst them Princess Adine Windischgrätz & had a long talk with her about Eleanora Duse the actress, a great friend of hers– She told me that the reports that the Duse is now leading a bad life with d’Annunzio the writer, are false. That she asked her herself & Duse told her that she is horrified at the notion but that if it had been true she would have confessed it. D’Annunzio has written a novel called “Fuoco” in wh he is supposed to recount his liaison with the Duse– She said as they had been staying in the same hotels &c she knew that appearances are against her– When first she heard of the report thro’ the newspapers she was in such despair that she had thought of suicide—but finally concluded it would only do the man too much horror. She said she had had the horrid book Fuoco on her table some weeks not knowing what it contained & he had always said “dont read it, I want to read it to you aloud”– I am glad to hear all this. I have a great respect & admiration for Duse & want to believe her to be good & had been distressed at the reports which now I will disbelieve.
