14 January 1901 — Rome | |
Monday. 14th [January 1901]. I was engaged to dine at the Curtis tonight but got a note from Dr Nevin saying they want to dine with him & inviting me also. I went off to consult Mrs Curtis & arranged to dine with her tomorrow instead of today & I went to Mme Hurtado & settled to dine with her as she had begged me to do so & I knew she wd have been offended had I gone to Dr Nevin’s. I returned to the Curtis to lunch—paid my bill at the hotel & Baker & I went & installed ourselves at 56 Babuino. It seemed rather melancholy & empty & I felt rather discouraged but it is of no use now & here I am for 2 months. I paid the rent in advance 625 a month. The landlady was civil helpful & obliging. Idita Bentivoglio came to see me & took me home to dinner with her mother & they sent a servant to see me safe back at night. I borrowed sheets for our beds from Mrs Curtis. | |
