18 January 1901 — Rome
Friday. 18th [January 1901]. Modelled. Went out at 3 called on Miss Peard the novelist who is ill with rheumatics. Finding I had forgotten my card case I came home to fetch it & met at my door Lady Albemarle & her daughter Hilda so brought them in to my rooms & sat talking a while. The great topic is the Duke of Norfolk’s speech here the other day when he came with the English pilgrims to see the Pope & in his address expressed a hope the Pope wd regain his temporal power thereby greatly offending the Italians. Lord Currie is also said to have been at a banquet where the King of Italy’s health was omitted among the toasts. Lady Albemarle (R.C.) denied the whole affair. When she left I walked to see Mme de Hurtado at Villino Buoncompagni & had tea there & met Princess Arduino Buoncompagni. Stayed talking till 7 & then called on the Dss of St Albans at Hotel Beau Lite. She is full of the Norfolk episode & says it is true all but the toasts. She is full of a Mr Bagot an R.C. vert who is showing up the Vatican system. I got home for dinner. Patience in eveng.
