19 January 1901 — Rome | |
Saturday. 19th [January 1901]. Modelled in morning. Went for a drive with Adeline Bedford in afternoon. We paid a visit to Countess Pasolini and she invited us both to dine with [her] next week. We drove in the Villa Borghese & Pincio. In evening I dined with Donna Laura Minghetti a very lively meal– Count Pasolini handed me to dinner. Met also Signor Luzzatti who said he had known Henry at Venice in 1867. There were 5 or 6 other men whose names I did not retain & a niece of our hostess newly married. At table a great discussion arose between Pasolini & Luzzatti. Pasolini unfolded a plan he has of writing a book on the 1st years & of each century since the Christian era. The others drew him on & then contested his facts. There was a great deal of noise & merriment. Luzzatti told us he was himself going to give a lecture to prove it was neither Nero who set fire to Rome nor the Christians. He would tell us no more now, we must go to hear his lecture. Got home about 10.30 & left all the people still talking & arguing. Pasolini talked to me of religion & creeds & said he would give them all to know 2 things for certain– Whether there is a God & whether there is another life after this. I told him I was surprised that his past life had not convinced them of both—one gets an innate conviction of them through ones sorrows & losses. | |
