11 February 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 11th [February 1901]. Modelled & wrote in morning. Directly after lunch went off to the Lido & landed at the Quattro Fontane. It was a heavenly day—not a cloud—& the sun quite hot. I walked along the shore in the direction of Malamocco—& thought of old days when I used to go on that road with Henry & the Empress Frederick & the merry parties we used to be & how one by one all were gone or going to the silent land & the circle of old friends was drawing smaller every day. I got home by 5 oclock. Had visits from Mrs Hulton, the French Consul & Mme Le Mallier & also from the Prefet & his wife Marchese & Marchesa Cassis. Now that there is a change of government at Rome I fear we may lose them which I shall regret. They are young & agreeable & she is English & intelligent & likes to borrow books from me. Today I lent her Henry’s Early Adventures which she carried away with her. Mr Montalba also came to see me & remained chatting till dinner time. Played patience in evening & resumed writing my reminiscences.
