8 April 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 8th April [1901]. Easter Monday. I gave an evening party inviting all the Venetians—the first time I have thus opened the house since 1894—when we gave a dance to celebrate our silver wedding– All this past week had sad memories for me for it was on 4th Ap. that Henry’s last illness came upon him so suddenly & we made that heart breaking journey to England together knowing it was our last. Well tonight I had about 60 people amongst whom was Dow. Lady Radnor who has come to settle in Venice & Countess Papadopoli & her handsome twin girls came also the Prefect, the “bella Countess” Morosini, Valmaranas, &c &c. Now that we have the electric light in the house it looks very brilliant at night & the rooms were much admired. We kept it up till after 12. Donna Laura Minghetti who is in Venice for a week with her daughter & the German Chancellor Bülow paid me a visit in the afternoon but they would not come to my party as they are here for rest & change. In the afternoon the whole of my party went to the Edens garden which is lovely now with spring flowers—rows of daffodils under the pergolas. Irène played the violin & Onie also sang at the evening party & were much applauded. Sr Trombini accompanied them.
