17 April 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 17th [April 1901]. Breakfasted at 7—wrote letters & went off to Campo S. Agnese on foot to sit to Ellen Montalba for my portrait which I am happy to say is getting finished. It was a lovely morning, the sun very hot but before the afternoon it got pretty cold again. Miss Paget & Mrs Manisty came at 2 to see the pictures & house. Miss P. is the daughter of the Surgeon Sir James & is a friend of Ruth Du Cane’s from whom she brought me an introduction– She was pleasant & a lady. Mr Christie called & asked me to go to the Sailor’s Institute tonight as Lord Wolseley who is in Venice had promised to go in the evening. I promised to go in spite of my cold & cough. Later Mr Christie sent me word that Lord W. would not be there so I determined to remain at home. I went out at 4 & paid Mrs Christie a visit. It was her day & there were several tourists there. I had several people to call on me at tea time—Dss Noci Mocenigo & her sister Countess Wallis, Mme Mayneri &c. Dined at 8 & bed at 10.30.
