18 April 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th [April 1901]. Went off to sit for my portrait by 10 after having written my letters, done accounts &c. Returned home at 1 for lunch. At 2.30 Signorina Giacomelli called & brought with her Genl Barrettiere to be introduced to me. He is the Italian Genl who commanded the Italian Army in Abyssinia & was defeated at the battle of Adua. He seems a pleasant good natured little man but has the appearance of being deficient in power– He enjoyed seeing the pictures here & seemed to understand them. He said he had known Henry when the Geographical Congress was held at Venice & he Barrettiere had been secretary to the Congress. We happened to talk about improvements in Italy & I asked him what was the state of the Prisons here. He said it was very bad & I said I wondered Italians did not make a stir over it. He said that when he was a Deputy he had spoken on the subject in the Chambers. I urged him to try & do something. He & Miss Giacomelli begged me to go to the Unione per il Bene to talk over the matter tomorrow at 3.30 & I half promised to go—tho’ I dont like putting myself forward. Afterwards I went to the Edens garden & found Mr & Mrs E. there—very sad over the mischief done by the hail storm 2 nights ago. It was cold so I did not stay long—brought home some pretty branches of fruit blossoms. Maria Cozzi, Iduna & Aspasie Kwekwitsch called late just before dinner.
