19 April 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 19th [April 1901]. A quiet morning modelling– Lady Albemarle & Lady Hilda Keppel to lunch & Horatio Brown– Went at 3.30 to the meeting at the “Unione per il Bene,” where 10 ladies & 4 men sat solemnly round a table in a very small room & then proceeded to chatter to each other. After waiting till past 4 to allow the laggards to come a Mme Buschner read a paper on a project for an asylum for poor children in the country. She was frequently interrupted by desultory conversation & there was no real discussion—she had to leave directly after she had done reading & the matter dropped. Mlle Giacomelli then addressed the company in a rigamaroly manner on the cheap publication of good literature & there arose such a Babel of talk that after suggesting in the din that a committee should be formed I took my departure as it was 5 o’cl & no business had been done. I had sat next to Genl Baratieri & sotto voce had arranged with him he should come some day to my house to talk over the “prison affair.” At the same time as I left Genl Ressenian left also in despair of the want of order in the proceedings. I went home to tea & then painted till 7 when I walked to the Edens to arrange abt going to the Fenice Concert tomorrow. They had asked me to go with them & I decided to take Hilda Keppel myself. Dined at 8 & early to bed.
