4 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 4th [May 1901]. The Kennedy family went sight seeing in the morning. I modelled– After lunch had a visit from Miss Buxton who had brought me letter of introduction. We knew her parents many years since & I remembered they had parrots wild in their park who bred & multiplied so we had a bond of sympathy & talked much of birds– The Kennedy family went off to Lido. I went out at 4 & went to the Baroness Franchetti’s. She had a garden party at the Franchetti Palace on the Grand Canal. Princess Alice of Monaco. A rather vulgar looking little woman—a Jewess—was there. Came home by 6 & Iduna came to specially see the Kennedys whom she knew at Constantinople. Marchesa Cassis also came to see me & sat some time chatting. After dinner Mr & Mrs Kennedy went out in gondola to see Mr & Mrs Robinson of the firm Robinson & Cleaver with whom they had travelled from Ancona. Mr R. is a great collector of pictures & being enormously rich gives great prices– I lighted the electric light & showed him round the rooms. He was intelligent & enthusiastic. He seems a clever man—has a feeling for art & a certain amount of knowledge. His wife is a pretty soft Scotch body—very pleasant. Mr R. is an Irishman & attends to his own business & can even be seen in his own shop in Regent St if one desires to speak to him. I showed him a picture Clara Montalba had given me to have raffled for the Church & he at once gave me 40 fcs towards it. They returned to their hotel at 11.30 very pleased with their visit.
