5 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 5th [May 1901]. All went to morning service. Coming out of church met Mme Rubini & told her Mr Robinson was inclined to buy her old picture if only she could give a name to the author. She went to see the Director of the Gallery Signor Cantalamessa & came on to me afterwards with his notes on the subject– He said the picture was valuable but no name cd be assigned it– So Mr R. will not buy it. Mme Rubini stayed to lunch with us. I had a note from Lord William Cecil saying Princess Beatrice (who had been this last week at the Grand Hotel) would come to tea at 4.30. She came with Lord William & Miss [illegible word] & had tea. She looked pretty but was rather shy. She gave a very bad account of my dear Empress Frederick whom she says is now utterly helpless & is rolled up in her blankets & carried downstairs sometimes & put into her Bath chair & taken out for an airing. After the Princess had left came Lady Galloway & then Countess Morosini—when they had gone I & Mrs Kennedy went out together for a row for an hour before dinner.
