7 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 7th [May 1901]. Rain poured all day long & I did not get out. The Kennedys were in & out several times. I modelled & painted. Adl Sir John Baird called in the morning– A nice old gentleman whom I had known when the Fleet came to Constantinople in our time. He is passing thro’ here only. Mme Rubini also called to tell me how disappointed she is at her picture not being sold. After dinner at 10 I went to the French Consul’s to meet M. & Mme Barrere French Ambassador to the Quirinale at Rome. He is here to meet Mr Waldeck Rousseau who is here to recoup his health– Countess Canevaro was at the Consulate & about a dozen others– M. Barrere is a youngish man—fair—rather common looking tall & thin. He speaks English perfectly having absolutely no foreign accent & is agreeable. But he has, in looks, rather the type of a commis-voyageur. His wife a little dark woman is evidently older than him. They have 2 daughters not very distinguée either. All are amiable & pleasant.
