14 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 14th [May 1901]. Poynters went out early. I corrected the proofs for my husband’s Biography. Had the surprise of a visit from Countess Olga Mocenigo who is here for a few hours– Also a long visit from Mr Christie—who is giving up the chaplaincy. Lunched at 1 & the Poynters left by 2.35 train for Rome. I went out in gondola and called on Lady Radnor & took her niece Miss Chaplin one of my conures as a present. Called on Marchesa Cassis & sat a while with her—& then came home. Lady Galloway called had tea & bade me good bye as she is leaving Venice. Two married Mocenigos of St Stae called—they speak English perfectly. I dined at 7.30 & went to the “Unione” where the General Committee was chosen & I amongst them. I had failed to get 2 Venetian ladies of good family to join as the “Clerccale” have denounced the Unione as socialists & freemasons & have frightened the feeble finical mind about it. The proceedings were done quite in order & therefore quickly & I got home at 10.30 & went to bed.
