17 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 17th May [1901]. Had a last interview with Mr Christie whom I shall not find here on my return as he will have left for his new Chaplaincy of Geneva. I & the 5 servants left Venice by 2 o’cl train. The Prefect & Marchesa Cassis came to the station to see me off also Iduna Bel. & Clara & Ellen Montalba– Signora Duse & her daughter were in the compartment I was in– At first I did not recognise the former but when I did we had a little talk. She had come to the station to see her daughter off for Berlin—& we went together as far as Verona where she left my train. I got to Milan at 7.30. Went to Hotel Cavour.
