18 May 1901 — Milan
Saturday. 18th [May 1901]. I walked out in the morning & went to see Siga Canzi & bought some new embroidery to do. Called at Cava L. Cavenaghi—he was out of town. Lunched & went off to the station at 12– Left Milan 12.30. There was no 2nd class to Lucerne so I had Baker with me in the carriage. There was a very nice German couple with us who were friendly & I aired my German with the lady. The husband spoke all languages even to Spanish which we spoke also together—but I was sadly rusty. We arrived at Bâle at 9 & started again at 10 for Calais. There was an immense crowd there chiefly people arrived from India by P&O express—& also by Rubatino line to Venice—amongst them I recognised Miss Sorabji who was in her Parsee costume & whom I had known 8 years ago at the Aberdare’s.
