19 May 1901 — En route to London
Sunday. 19th [May 1901]. We reached Calais about 12 & I sat on deck with Miss Sorabji & her party Mrs Holland & Mrs St John Hornby & we had a perfectly smooth passage– At Dover I got into the compartment with Mr & Mrs Percy Wyndham & Miss Carlson who have also come from Venice– Went to Victoria Station. On arriving at home I found Edward Duncannon waiting for me he had been to Charing X to meet me thinking I should have gone there. He wanted to tell me the bad news of the serious illness of Charlie Eliot who is dying of peritonitis. Of course it was a shock to me as I had not even heard of his illness. He would not allow me to go off this evening to Constance & said Blanche was with her. Nellie & I went to dine in Cav. Sqr with Dun: Oranmores were there staying & Mr Burton dining– He took Blanche off at 10 to Onslow Place as she had promised to pass the night there & I & Nellie returned home to bed.
