21 May 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 21st [May 1901]. Breakfast in my room. Wrote & read & dressed by 10. Did accounts &c. Went off at 12 in hansom to Onslow Gardens—found that Sir F. Laking had just seen Charlie & had given a ray of hope. If he could be kept alive & well an operation might be done which might save him. I did not stay long & went off to see Mr Sheppard at the Chapel Royal for Constance to say how Charlie was & to thank him for his offer of help. As I walked up St James St I stopped at the Venice Glass Shop to leave a message & there I found Ivor—we walked up St James Street together & talked about our brother Arthur’s debts—which he says he is not enclined to help to pay & is annoyed with Rhuvon for his not doing so– He Ivor has most generously repaid me the money I spent in paying various things. All this is still a great worry to me. I went home to lunch. At 3 Mrs Rate fetched me & took me for a drive. We called on her daughter Enid Erskine who has a pretty little house in Chester Square. Enquired at Onslow Gardens & found that 2 Drs had just been & pronounced also that Charlie is a shade better– Driving through the Park we saw that Queen driving—it is the first time I have seen her as Queen. I went to Marlboro’ House & wrote my name. Came home to tea & found Lady Poynter waiting to see me. She is going to Paris on Thursday & if Charlie is better I promised to join her there later. Went with Nelly to her shop in Cork St to try on a dress she is making for me. She & I went to dine at 17 Cavendish Square only Irène & Jack Eliot besides Blanche & Edward. The Oranmores who are staying there were dining out.
