28 May 1901 — Paris
Tuesday. 28th [May 1901]. Went out at 10 to see Lady Poynter & settled to go to St Cloud with them in the afternoon—then went to Mlle Michaud 91 Boulevard Capucines to order gowns– I had always had my dresses from her & Henry always preferred them to any others & used to say I never looked as well in dresses made by any one else so I have determined to return to her– We came back to our hotel for lunch at 12.30 & then rested till nearly 3 when we went to the bridge near the Tuileries & met the Poynters & went by boat to St Cloud. It was curious to see the masses of debris & brick still remaining from the Exhibition buildings of last year. It gave the banks of the Seine rather a desolate look. It was a very sultry day & a storm threatened but happily did not come on. It took us abt an hour to get to St Cloud. We landed & walked to see the great cascade & then to the gardens wh have been made where the Palace once stood. It was a melancholy idea to think it had all so completely gone. We went up to the Trocadero garden at the top of which there was a pergola where refreshments were to be had & we got some tea. We were much amused at a bridal party who were also seated there taking refreshments. There was the curé—the bride in her bridal dress—the bridegroom in evening dress with a large button hole—all the men also in evening dress & the women very nicely got up. They were a merry party & very orderly. A policeman came up to us & ordered us to remove our chairs from the grass on to the path! The French always seem to delight in interfering with the liberty of the subject in a puerile way! We took a boat which brought us back to Paris at 7. Aggie & I were amused watching a noisy hoydenish girl who smoked cigarettes & behaved foolishly & chaffed 2 young artist students who were ridiculously got up with long flowing hair & green ties– The girl was evidently a model & knew the students. Nellie & I returned to our hotel—dressed & then went to dine with the Poynters at the Londres but came back early.
