30 May 1901 — Paris
Thursday. 30th [May 1901]. I accompanied Nellie to the Bon Marché shop & there we spent the whole morning till lunch as she had commissions for herself & others to execute– It is a wonderful place where one can buy almost everything necessary for a lady’s dress or house—but it is very fatiguing owing to the crowd & heat—& the day has been sultry. After lunch we went shopping again to order me a bonnet & to try on our gowns at Mlle Michaud’s & then returned to tea at 4. At 5.15 I went off in a cab to see Count de Basterot at 10 Place de Laborde– A cousin of his came while I was there a lady whose husband is a diplomatist & now at Berne also 2 old gentlemen one of which was Mr [illegible word] Diderot very venerable & with a fine head & white hair & wearing the red button of the Legion d’Honneur. When I returned to the hotel I found Nellie gloating over her purchases wh had arrived in my absence. We dined at 8 & played patience. Count de Basterot was very cheerful but terribly lame, worse than ever. I got a letter this evening from Connie very sad but happy in her children– The deep mourning border & the remembrance of all she went thro made my heart ache again– This is the first time I have stayed at this hotel without Henry & every step I take reminds me of the many happy days we had here together & I miss him at every turn—even the dressmaker says she remembers what interest he used to take in choosing my gowns with me & what a pity he is not here now!!–
