20 June 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 20th [June 1901]. Mr Widener one of the rich American delegates came to lunch with us. He began life as a butcher—& now owns half the electric railways in his country. He told us he has a large collection of fine things—mostly pictures—amongst them a Raphael for which he gave £18000– He is quiet unassuming & pleasant– Ivor gave us his 3 stalls at the opera & I went Kate, her son Reggie & Lady Clark with whom he is staying.
