7 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 7th [July 1901]. I went to the German Chapel Royal. The King & Queen were there– Was home at 11—stayed in till evening. It was quite cold again. Nellie lunched out– Evely Eliot lunched with me. She is a nice girl. Sir Henry Thompson, & Mr Charles Hallé came to tea. Arthur Burr called. I should hardly have recognised him. From a spare fair youth he has developed into a stout grey man—always good looking. He is now on the stock exchange in New York & says he is doing well. He was pleasant & friendly. Spoke much of his cousins née Scobell & of the unhappy marriage of Melony Mrs à Court whose husband seems to be a real scoundrel– She he says is still handsome & is much aged by grief as she was devoted to her husband who has neglected her for other women. Dacre Du Cane called quite late & at 7 accompanied Nellie & me to call at 17 Cav. Sqr but found no one at home—we met Duncannon & Vere in the street as we came towards home & had a talk with them. Blanche & Irène came to see me before lunch this morning. Nellie & I dined at home & to bed at 11–
