Thursday. 11th [July 1901]. I translated & typed for Duncannon letters from Guggenheim & Marcello & an article from an Italian paper. Sir William Des Voeux & his daughter also Hilda Keppel came to lunch & Lady Des Voeux came in to fetch them at 2 o’cl. As Nela came in then I took her out driving with me & I went to see Henry Alderson who is in a nursing home having had an operation in his nose to cure his deafness. He was in bed. I did not stay many minutes with him. We went to Bond St to try & get tickets for Nela & Ruth to go to the theatre with Dacre but the French Play Cyrano de Bergerac done by Coquelin & Sarah Bernhardt was £1.3 a stall so we gave it up. Nellie & I dined at 17 Cavendish Square—a large party. Mr Tighe took me in to dinner. The Wimbornes were there, Mr Howard Morley & others I did not know. There was Maggie Ormsby Gore (née Gordon) whom I had not seen for years—charming as all that family are in manner–
