12 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 12th [July 1901]. I typed Henry’s letters to Mr Ross all the morning– Drove out in afternoon. Called on Lady MacDonell wife of our Minister at Lisbon. Still a lovely woman though her hair is growing white. They had been with us when we were at Madrid & we were always good friends. Saw her daughter Victoria who was born in 1885 & she is godchild to both Henry & myself. She is very delicate & not very pretty. Her mother also is tall graceful & stately. I went on to Onslow Gardens to see Connie whom I found very low. Her scapegrace son Ernest returned today from the Transvaal & is again on her hands. Found all the actors at tea on my return after which there was a rehearsal. Georgie de Perpigna came to see me– She has lately been with the Empress Frederick & gave a very sad account of her– She is taken in a sling sheet down to her carriage & takes drives—but is not dressed only covered with a cloak. In these drives one of her daughters sits by her side & the Dr opposite– Georgie would follow in another carriage– H.M. would stop her carriage to call up the 2nd carriage from time to time that she might talk to Georgie. She sat with H.M. while she was in her bed & after a few minutes H.M. eyes wd close & her head drop—& after a short silence she roused again & went on with conversation. Georgie does not believe she can last over 2 months. Gertie Seymer came in for a short time– It was a very hot oppressive day & a storm threatened. I went to dine with Sir Edward & Lady Poynter 28 Albert Gate. Met Mr & Mrs Walrond there–
