17 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 17th [July 1901]. Mr Willie Bruce came to see me at 10.30 & I delivered over to him all Henry’s letters to his family during the time he was at Nineveh that he might use as much of it as he thinks proper in editing the Autobiography. He undertakes to bring it out some time early next year– Afterwards I resumed modelling the small wax figure of the noble lady which I have now nearly finished. Mrs Wellesly Hanson came to see me & remained to luncheon. Mr & Mrs Strong lunched also with me. I told him the Venturi when called on me the other day had asked me to publish an illustrated catalogue of Henry’s collection of pictures—& that I was willing but did not know how to set about it. Mr Strong at once exclaimed enthusiastically, Oh I am so glad! I should like to do it to help you & to write the text & he promised to set to work at once to find out abt the illustrations from Braun– I showed him my little bronze figure with which he was much pleased & named it “Ariadne.” When they were gone I went out & took Mrs Hanson with me. I went to call on Connie & found her in the garden behind the house & with her Evy Portman—a friend of our childhood. Her father lived at Dean’s Court close to Wimborne– She was always very pretty & gentle & refined & slim. She married a cousin of the same name as her father & is now a widow—still pretty in manner & face—only a little stouter. I had not seen her since she married—wh she did before I married. I got home a little after 5 to find I had missed a visit from Blanche. At 7 I drove out again—called at Blanche’s & then went on to see Henry Alderson– Found Lady Clark & Gus Alderson there. I drove Lady C. back to her house in Mount St & went home. Gus dined with me & left soon after dinner. Played Patience. It is 3 years today since dear Arthur died.
