18 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 18th [July 1901]. Woke with a bad headache & remained in bed all day till 6. Nellie, Mary & Nela returned from Ascot where their acting had gone off very well. At 6.30 had a visit fm Mr Musgrave—& then went off to see Henry Alderson who had been up all day & was much better. Home—dined, played patience & went to bed. This morning I had a visit from Lady MacDonell who sat talking a long time. She told me Mrs G. Keppel had been at Lisbon & had been more fast & vulgar than one could have believed possible. Lady M. had just come back from Marlboro’ House from a visit to Pss Victoria. Lady D. returns tomorrow to Lisbon but Sir Hugh will have to retire from the service in March next & then they will settle in London & we promised then to see something of each other– She kindly said she liked me & had always had an admiration for me as all that an English lady ought to be which is tremendously high praise—& something to have to try to live up to—Ojàlà!
