21 July 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 21st [July 1901]. No church going for me. Sat in the drawing room all day with my foot up on a chair. Connie came with Casals from the German Chapel Royal & left him with me. Mr Burton was here looking after my foot & we settled that both he & Connie should come & dine tonight. At 12 Casals took leave of me—quite sad at going & I too am sorry to lose him. He is intelligent, affectionate & grateful. Vere came to luncheon & dinner. I had my meals brought upstairs. Visit from Mrs Curtis– Also from Ruth Du Cane & later from Mr James Knowles Editor of the Nineteenth Century– He was interested at seeing my autograph book & flattered at being asked to sign his name in it. At last the real object of his unaccustomed visit to me was disclosed when he asked if I would give him a letter of Tennyson’s to Henry introducing to him Knowles himself. He said he remembered T. described him as “a good Architect & a good fellow” & he would like to possess the letter– I think it is asking a good deal of me to give up such a valuable autograph but I said I would give it to him when I found it.
