17 October 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 17th [October 1901]. Nellie & Eda accompanied Emilia & me & Baker to Victoria station & saw us off by 11 A.M. train. There was a terrible crowd at the station as the P&O train conveying passengers for India via Marseilles started at the same time as the usual train. In the same carriage as Emilia & me there was an officer & his wife & baby. They seemed very nice people & the 4 month old infant was very quiet & when we got to Dover seeing the sea was very rough I told the mother she might bring the child into my private cabin which she gladly did & proceeded to get out the bottle & feed the child—as soon as we started she was hors de combat & so sick that she had to leave the baby to me & Baker– Emilia sat outside—& neither of us were sick wh was a wonder as the crossing was a bad one. At Calais I parted from the grateful Indian lady who said she had engaged a native nurse from Marseilles where they would arrive tomorrow morning. In our Bâle train I found Mr Ambrose Poynter, Sir Edward’s son going also to Italy. Emilia & I had berths in the sleeping car & were very comfortable.
