19 October 1901 — Milan
Saturday. 19th [October 1901]. We went off together in a cab to see the remains of Leonardo da Vinci’s Cenacolo– Also to St Ambrogio & to the Monasterio Maggiore to see the splendid Luinos. The old woman who showed us the now deserted coro—was very talkative & repeated many better things she had learned of the priests. She said that Garibaldi had driven nails into the frescos & when I asked her who Garibaldi was she said she had been told that he was “en frammassone, un diavolo un cattivo uomo.” I remembered having gone all over the church with Henry & how he had enjoyed it & how enthusiastic Morelli had been over it. We passed near the Castello & only had just time to look inside the great courts– It is a magnificent thing & is being beautifully restored—& must be costing the Govt an immense sum. It will be used as a museum– Having read Mrs Ady’s “Beatrice d’Este” with the acct of all that had happened there in her time I had been anxious to see the Castle. We hurried back to the hotel, lunched & went off to the 1.5 train. Two French nurses with a nice little 2 year old American child got into the same carriage & an old Italian lady whom it turned out I had known & who was going to Vicenza– We reached Venice at 7.15 & were glad to be safely at Ca’ Capello again & dined & went to bed early. Kind Montalbas met me at the station.
