1 December 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 1st December [1901]. I went to morning service & being Advent Sunday remained to Holy Communion. Sophy Palmer joined me at that service & we afterwards walked on the Zattere in the sun & so home together. In the afternoon I went with Sophy to tea with the Edens—& then again I went out to the Sailor’s Institute to the Sailor’s service at 7. There were 23 sailors & Mr Newman the lay reader did the simple service & gave an unlearned tho’ impressive discourse. This is the last evening in the present house wh tomorrow is to be left for new premises on the Grand Canal opposite the railway station. I found the others halfway through dinner on my return home.
