8 February 1902 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 8th [February 1902]. The rain ceased but the weather remained dreary. I read aloud to Emilia as usual the Psalms & some chapters from Genesis– She is interested in the history of the Jews as therein recorded & as all R.C.s is less well up in it than we Protestants. I also read from Molmentis Vita Privata di Venezia. Mr Harston came to talk over “parish” officers. We went to lunch with Mr Horatio Brown & his mother at 1. They are living in their 2nd floor where they retire for warmth in the winter. They were quite alone– Afterwards we went to Palazzo Vendramin to M. Bompard’s studio & he showed us his paintings for America brilliant in colouring well drawn but not very artistic. He paints with great facility & sells his pictures in America. The palace in wh he has his studio is one of the finest in Venice but it is sad to see the whole thing falling into decay & the wall paintings hanging down in strips from the walls & the stucco ceilings all mouldy. It is said the very ceilings are being sold now. We went home by 4 oclock & after tea read & worked.
